Seven Trigg County High School Students Selected for Summer Academies

Seven Trigg County High School students have been selected to participate in the GEAR UP Kentucky Summer Academies. The summer academies are 3-week enrichment programs on a university campus and are sponsored by the GEAR UP Kentucky 3.0 program.

Lindsay Brown (10th grade), Taylor Johnson (9th grade), and Colt Lancaster (9th grade) will travel to the University of Kentucky to participate in the GEAR UP Kentucky Summer Academy. Summer Cottrell (10th grade) will participate in the academy at the University of Louisville. Kyler Bohn, Kelly Brandon and Jennifer Sedberry are all 10th graders and will travel to Western Kentucky University for the academy.

While at summer academies students have a daily schedule of classes taught by college professors. Students experience life as a college student by staying in a campus residence hall and interacting with college staff and students.

The Academy was developed to help students gain skills needed for college and career success. Through the program students have the opportunity to visualize themselves as future college students. The Academy is provided at no cost for GUK students/families and includes the following three components:

  • General Studies Core Courses: Courses focused on building research, reading, writing & communication skills.
  • Focus Areas: Courses that give students an in-depth, hands-on experience in a particular field including agriculture, engineering, science, fine arts, global studies, and business & economics among others.

  • Café College: Interactive evening sessions in the residence hall that focus on the everyday life of the college student.

Parents are invited to campus for a showcase presentation of student work on the final day. For more information about this program visit
