Jan. 30, 2017, Cadiz, KY – Beginning with the upcoming school year, children entering kindergarten must be five years old on or before August 1. Up until now, the cutoff was October 1.
The General Assembly changed the law in 2012, based on the premise that younger students may not be ready for kindergarten and may not get off to a successful start. The change takes effect for the 2017-2018 school year.
Trigg County Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration on Thursday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Primary School. Children and parents should check in at the Primary School office.
Those children who are not eligible for kindergarten have the opportunity to attend preschool, which is held 4 days per week. Preschool is open to any child who will be 4 years old by Aug. 1. Preschool registration will be held Tuesday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Primary School
“The new entry age cutoff is definitely a transition for our community,” said Beth Sumner, assistant superintendent of instruction. “It was a decision made at the state level, but I believe it will ultimately benefit our students and community. I’m excited that we have a great preschool program to offer those students who will not yet be 5 by Aug. 1.”
Anyone who has questions about kindergarten or preschool should attend registration.
